SEEDS OF SUCCESS
The Natural History Museum
For the Natural History Museum's 'Voyages of Discovery' exhibition, we made an interesting discovery of our own. Original samples and sketches of the first cocoa plants (Theobroma cacao), discovered and collected in Jamaica by Sir Hans Sloane were on display.
He found it 'nauseous' but by mixing it with milk made it more palatable. He brought this chocolate recipe back to England where it was manufactured and at first sold by apothecaries as a medicine. Eventually, in the nineteenth century, it was being taken up by Messrs Cadbury who manufactured chocolate using Sloane's recipe.
Our souvenir chocolates tell the story of chocolate itself, from the plants and sketches to commentaries, portraits and even the first packaging...
